The IMC Exhibition, held at the Shenzhen Planning Building on January 17, 2025, titled "Coexistence of Land and Sea: Mangrove Ecosystems in High-Density Urban Areas," highlighted Shenzhen’s innovative practices and experiences in mangrove conservation and restoration. During the opening ceremony, Prof. Bao Daming, Director General of the IMC Interim Secretariat joined Mr. Xu Songming, Director of the Shenzhen Municipal Planning and Natural Resources Bureau, for a mangrove sapling planting ceremony to mark the official launch of the exhibition.
Throughout the event, Mr. Zhou Wei, a public advocate for the protection of the Ba Guang ancient silver-leaf tree community, shared insights into the unique charm and conservation significance of Shenzhen’s mangrove ecosystem. Dr. Sifko from Shenzhen University discussed his research on mangroves in the region and expressed confidence that the establishment of IMC will greatly advance global mangrove conservation efforts. The exhibition’s curator, Mr. Shen Xiaoming, provided a detailed explanation of the exhibition design, offering an in-depth interpretation of the core concept of “Coexistence of Land and Sea.”
The event also featured an “International Mangrove Salon” session, where experts from countries including Pakistan, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Cameroon, and Nigeria engaged in lively discussions on mangrove wetland ecosystem conservation and scientific research.
This exhibition not only showcased Shenzhen’s efforts and achievements in mangrove conservation and restoration but also highlighted the IMC’s essential role in facilitating global cooperation and knowledge exchange in mangrove protection. Looking ahead, the IMC remains committed to establishing an open, inclusive, and collaborative international cooperation mechanism for mangroves and coastal blue carbon ecosystems. Through these efforts, the IMC aims to contribute meaningfully to the implementation of the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature.
