The Republic of the Sudan Joins the IMC as the 20th Signatory State

On August 25, 2025, the Republic of the Sudan officially became the 20th country to join the Establishment Agreement of the International Mangrove Center (IMC). The agreement was signed by Dr. Mona Ali Mohamed Ahmed, Secretary General of the Higher Council for Environment and Natural Resources, on behalf of the Sudanese government.

The decision to join the IMC follows Sudan’s participation in the 15th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (COP15), held last month in Zimbabwe. During the conference, Sudanese national representatives engaged with the IMC’s mission and objectives and expressed strong interest in enhancing collaboration on mangrove and wetland conservation and restoration. By joining the IMC, Sudan wishes to deepen cooperation with other member states, promote knowledge-sharing, and support capacity-building initiatives for the conservation and restoration, and wise and sustainable use of mangrove and wetlands ecosystems.

The International Mangrove Center is the world’s first intergovernmental organization dedicated to mangrove conservation and restoration. By bringing together countries with a shared interest in mangrove ecosystems, the IMC aims to promote international cooperation and joint actions in mangrove conservation, restoration, and wise and sustainable use; strengthen the implementation of the Convention, and other relevant current and future environmental commitments, including but not limited to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, the Paris Agreement, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development along with its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
