On 5 November, 2022, at the opening ceremony of the 14th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, the Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed the establishment of IMC in Shenzhen, China.

On 6 September, 2023, at the 62nd Meeting of the Standing Committee of the Convention, the IMC was endorsed as a new RRI within the framework of the Convention.

On 6 November, 2024, the Signing Ceremony for the Establishment Agreement of the IMC was held in Shenzhen, China. Representatives from 18 countries officially signed the agreement and unveiled the plaque for the center.

On 25 July, 2025, the signing ceremony marking Zimbabwe’s joining to the IMC was held in Victoria Falls City, Zimbabwe.

On August 25, 2025, the Republic of the Sudan officially signed the Establishment Agreement of IMC became the 20th member country.

Mission
To promote international cooperation and joint actions in mangrove conservation, restoration, and wise and sustainable use; strengthen the implementation of the Convention, and other relevant current and future environmental commitments, including but not limited to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, the Paris Agreement, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development along with its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Objectives

Promote knowledge sharing and strengthen joint research cooperation;

Enhance technology transfer and scientific and technical cooperation, and training;

Develop education, information, communication, and public awareness mechanisms;

Build and/or enhance capacity, and conduct pilot projects.
